The Modular Purification Air Handling Unit

The core equipment of hospital clean air systems is the modular purification air handling unit. It has stricter sealing and structural requirements than ordinary air conditioning units. For biological cleanrooms, the system resistance is higher, which imposes higher standards on unit tightness. The complete unit is assembled with multiple functional sections as required: fresh air and return air mixing section, pre-filter section, heating section, surface cooling section, humidification section, fan section, sterilization section, secondary return air section, transition section, medium-efficiency filter section, air outlet section and sound attenuation section. During engineering design, designers select required sections and arrange them scientifically according to the cleanliness class of the project.

Fresh Air and Return Air Mixing Section

It mixes fresh air and primary return air within this section. Manual regulating valves are installed at fresh air and return air inlets. If the system is equipped with automatic control devices, electric regulating valves will be fitted at fresh air and return air inlets. In transition seasons, increased fresh air volume can save energy.

Pre-Filter Section

This section is fitted with Onecleans pre-filters. Panel pre-filters occupy less space. Bag pre-filters feature larger filtration area and lower resistance under the same face velocity, which shortens unit length and saves mechanical room space. Bag pre-filters are preferred when mechanical room space is sufficient. We recommend suitable pre-filters according to project cleanliness level and site conditions instead of blindly relying on selection software.

Heating Section

It heats air in winter or re-heats air in summer. Hot water heaters or steam heaters are available depending on heat sources. Electric heaters can also be adopted after technical and economic comparison.

Surface Cooling Section

It contains cooling coils and drain pans to cool or dehumidify air in summer.

Humidification Section

Humidifiers are installed here. For biological cleanrooms, dry steam humidifiers are preferred, as they do not contaminate air and allow easy humidification control. Water spray humidifiers (electrode, centrifugal and ultrasonic types) tend to breed bacteria in water tanks, so they shall be avoided in biological cleanroom projects.

Fan Section

Centrifugal fans are installed inside. Under required air volume and pressure, low-speed fans are recommended to reduce noise. Spring isolators deliver good vibration damping. Stainless steel fans are recommended for units used in hospital clean operating departments.

Sterilization Section

Ozone generators or UV germicidal lamps are equipped. Ozone sterilization is eco-friendly and effective for killing bacteria inside units, ductwork and cleanrooms. UV sterilization only works on the inner surfaces of the unit. Ozone sterilization must be carried out when no personnel stay in the cleanroom, because ozone corrodes circuit boards of some electronic instruments.

Secondary Return Air Section

This section can be adopted if secondary return air is required for air treatment.

Transition Section

It reserves space for maintenance without equipment installed, fitted with access doors for later inspection.

Medium-Efficiency Filter Section

This section is equipped with Onecleans bag medium-efficiency filters. In some projects, the medium-efficiency filter section is combined with the air outlet section to form a combined medium-efficiency air outlet section. Air outlets are reserved on the top for access to technical plenum. For hospital clean operating rooms, air outlets are usually arranged on the side of the top to reduce elbows and simplify piping.

Air Outlet Section

It may be combined with the medium-efficiency filter section. Air outlets can be arranged on the top or side based on site conditions.

Sound Attenuation Section

It reduces noise. Micro-perforated plate silencers are widely used in purification projects. The sound attenuation section is recommended at the unit outlet. If installed at the unit inlet or outlet, sufficient length must be reserved to guarantee noise reduction effect. When mechanical room space is limited, silencers can be mounted on supply and return air ducts instead of inside the unit.

HEPA Filters: Core Guardian for Key Medical Clean Areas

Besides pre-filters and medium-efficiency filters inside air handling units, Onecleans also supplies terminal HEPA filters for cleanrooms. HEPA filters are installed at the air supply terminals of clean operating rooms, sterile nursing stations, anesthesia laboratories and clean corridors. They achieve over 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.3 μm particles, efficiently removing bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms, and strictly controlling airborne particle and bacterial counts in clean areas.

In operating rooms (ORs), HEPA filters are mounted in ceiling laminar flow hoods and air supply outlets, delivering purified sterile air to surgical zones to create a dust-free and bacteria-free environment and effectively reduce post-operation infection risks.
