Gel Seal HEPA Filters: Knife-Edge & Fluid Seal Technology Explained
What Is a Gel Seal HEPA Filter?
A gel seal HEPA filter (also called a fluid-seal or knife-edge filter) seals into its housing using a soft gel channel instead of a traditional flat gasket. A knife edge on the housing presses into the gel, creating an airtight, leak-free seal that is quick to install and highly reliable. Gel seal filters are the standard in pharmaceutical cleanrooms, biosafety cabinets and critical containment applications.
Our Gel Seal HEPA Filter with Knife Edge delivers HEPA-grade efficiency with the installation speed and leak integrity that regulated cleanrooms demand.
Gel Seal vs Gasket Seal
| Feature | Gel Seal | Gasket Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Sealing method | Knife edge pressed into gel channel | Flat gasket compressed against frame |
| Leak integrity | Excellent, self-sealing | Good, depends on compression |
| Installation | Fast, no torque sequence | Requires even gasket compression |
| Replacement | Drop-in, reusable knife edge | Gasket may need replacing |
How Gel Seal Filters Work
The filter frame has a recessed channel filled with a non-drying, non-outgassing gel. The cleanroom housing has a protruding knife edge. When the filter is fitted, the knife edge slices into the gel, and the gel flows around it to form a continuous airtight seal. The result is a fast, repeatable, leak-free installation that passes DOP/PAO scan testing on the first attempt.

Applications
- Pharmaceutical cleanrooms — aseptic processing and filling
- Biosafety cabinets — laminar flow and containment
- Hospital isolation and operating suites
- Critical cleanrooms where leak integrity is audited regularly
How to Choose a Gel Seal Filter
- Verify the knife-edge orientation (top, bottom or side entry) to match your housing.
- Confirm the efficiency grade — H14 is common for pharma; ULPA for stricter zones.
- Specify dimensions and gel channel depth for a proper drop-in fit.
- Plan for gel replenishment during routine maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the advantage of a gel seal over a gasket?
Gel seals provide a more reliable, self-sealing, leak-free installation with less effort — especially valuable in cleanrooms where every filter must pass scan testing.
Is the gel reusable?
The knife edge is reusable; the gel channel may need topping up or re-filling when filters are replaced. Non-outgassing gels are standard for cleanroom use.
Can gel seal filters be made as ULPA?
Yes, we manufacture gel seal filters in HEPA and ULPA grades to your specifications.
