Mirror-Finished Stainless Steel FFU Frames: A Lesson from a Pharmaceutical Cleanroom

A while ago, a Product Manager from a pharmaceutical workshop shared a long-standing concern with us.

Although the ceilings and walls in his workshop were made of stainless steel, dust still easily accumulated on the wall and ceiling surfaces after routine cleaning and alcohol disinfection. Fine particles were also generated during wiping, continuously undermining the cleanroom classification of the pharmaceutical workshop and creating a heavy daily-maintenance workload.

The customer reached out to us, hoping to find the root cause. Since visits to other pharmaceutical manufacturers for comparison were not possible, we contacted our mirror-finished stainless-steel material supplier and accompanied the Product Manager to the supplier’s site to inspect the sheet samples in person. We also discussed material options for the frame of the Fan Filter Unit.

After examining the samples and learning about the properties of different stainless-steel sheets, the reason became clear. Conventional stainless-steel wall and ceiling panels have rough, uneven surfaces with tiny gaps that trap dust. Repeated alcohol wiping releases fine particles from the surface, which keep contaminating the clean environment.

This case gave our engineers important inspiration: the frame of our Fan Filter Unit should also be made of mirror-finished stainless steel. Mirror-finished stainless-steel frames feature a flat, smooth and dense surface. They withstand repeated alcohol disinfection, resist dust build-up and release very few particles. When this material is adopted on the Fan Filter Unit, it can better satisfy the strict cleanliness requirements of pharmaceutical workshops, help maintain stable cleanroom classification and reduce long-term cleaning and maintenance work.
